It is almost here! Christmas!
I am excited to spend the day with my family opening gifts and eating good food. This Christmas, my greatest struggle has been swinging between excited anticipation over the day and knowing it’s going to be over in a blink of an eye. I am tempted to feel disappointed before the day even begins. It will be a fleeting moment in the history of the year that will start and end in a flash. In no time the entire holiday will be over and life will just move on.
This perspective does nothing to serve me except to rob the joy of the moment.
It is true; we cannot stop time, but each moment we have on this earth is a gift. I love the way the Message paraphrases Solomon’s words in Ecclesiastes 5:18-20.
“After looking at the way things are on this earth, here’s what I’ve deduced is the best way to live: Take care of yourself, have a good time, and make the most of whatever job you have for as long as God gives you life. And that’s about it. That’s the human lot. Yes, we should make the most of what God gives, both the bounty and the capacity to enjoy it, accepting what’s given and delighting in the work. It’s God’s gift! God deals out joy in the present, the now.”
So this year, let’s choose to enjoy the moment.
Soak in the chaos, the laughs, and the joy of being together. Make memories that will last far beyond one day because this is part of the gift of Christmas God wants us to experience.
